What is Cocobagh?

Together with our partners Eco Jute and WBC, we launched Cocobagh Social Business Venture, a social business venture in West Bengal to create training and employment opportunities for the community surrounding our production facility.

Aimed at members of the community who are marginalised through cultural or social reasons we are focusing on empowering widowed women who don’t have access to training or employment.

Our goal is to support these women by providing them with the basic finances, the skills needed and a route to employment – so that they can afford for their children to go to school.

Cocobagh is building a sustainable business where all profits are reinvested back into the project to offer more opportunities for the whole community.

Wherever you see the ‘Cocobagh’ swing tag on WBC products, these products directly contribute and support the Cocobagh Social Business Venture. In purchasing them you’ll be reminded not just of the talented artisan producers who make them, but also the opportunities your money is creating to help new women learn the skills needed to make them.

So far, I have learnt that things don’t always grow as quickly as I want them to.  Whilst I am still eager to get things moving quickly, I have learned to accept that real change takes time and maybe this is one of those projects that will evolve karmically.

However, this doesn’t mean that the project or the people in the project are not evolving, because they are. We now have 3 of the students using electric machines, and making great gains in terms of quality and speed. Ok they’re not yet commercially viable in terms of speed or quality, but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither of which was it our main goal when we started the project.

The goal of the Cocobagh Project is to offer marginalised people from the local community an opportunity to learn the skills they need to gain employment, so that they can earn enough to provide a healthy lifestyle and education for their children. If we keep doing what we’re doing, I feel certain we can achieve it.
